Benign naevi present usually with symmetrical patterns as described in the benign naevus section. Recognition of these patterns is essential in identifying benign/dysplastic patterns from melanoma. Dysplastic naevi can present with any of these bening patterns often with subtle areas of asymmetry. Any naevus with a multicomponent pattern (i.e more than 2 different structure - globules, reticular network, blotches, regression, blue-white veil..) should be excised to exclude a melanoma.
Dysplastic naevi
A moderately dysplastic naevus with an eccentric broad network at 7 o'clock.
